Freedom of speech and religion are under assault worldwide. Understanding these threats helps us appreciate what we have — and why we must defend it.
China operates one of the world's most sophisticated censorship systems, the 'Great Firewall.' Religious practice is heavily regulated — Christians, Muslims (Uyghurs), Tibetan Buddhists, and Falun Gong practitioners face systematic persecution. An estimated 1.5 million Uyghurs have been detained in 're-education camps.'
Russia has dramatically curtailed press freedom and political speech since 2022. Independent media has been shut down or forced into exile. Laws criminalize 'discrediting' the military or spreading 'false information' about government operations, with penalties of up to 15 years in prison.
Iran's theocratic government enforces strict religious law. Conversion from Islam is punishable by death. Christians, Baha'is, and other religious minorities face systematic persecution. Women who refuse to wear the hijab face arrest and imprisonment.
North Korea is ranked last in the world for press freedom by Reporters Without Borders. All media is state-controlled. Religion is effectively banned except for state-sanctioned worship of the Kim dynasty. Citizens caught with Bibles or foreign media face execution or labor camps.
Saudi Arabia prohibits public worship by non-Muslims and bans the construction of non-Muslim religious buildings. Apostasy and blasphemy are punishable by death. Political dissent is criminalized, and journalists face imprisonment.
Several Western European democracies have enacted 'hate speech' laws that criminalize speech deemed offensive to religious or ethnic groups. While intended to protect minorities, these laws have been used to prosecute Christians for quoting Bible verses and to silence legitimate political debate.
Canada's Bill C-16 and various provincial human rights codes have been used to compel speech and restrict religious expression. Pastors have faced legal action for preaching traditional religious views. The government has proposed internet regulation bills that would restrict online speech.
While the First Amendment remains the world's strongest protection for speech and religion, internal threats have emerged. The ACLU and similar organizations use litigation to remove religious expression from public life. Social media platforms suppress certain viewpoints. Government agencies have been found to pressure platforms to censor speech.
The United States Constitution, and specifically the First Amendment, stands as the world's most powerful legal protection for freedom of speech and religion. No other document in human history has so effectively constrained government power and protected individual liberty.
But the First Amendment is only as strong as the people who defend it. When courts reinterpret it, when government agencies pressure private companies to censor speech, when religious expression is driven from the public square — the protections erode.
The Constitutional Freedom Foundation exists to ensure that what is happening in China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea does not happen here. We defend the Constitution in the courts, in the public square, and in the hearts and minds of every American citizen.
